What Are My Options with a Ductless System?

Once popular mostly in commercial spaces like restaurants, ductless systems have become a go-to type of whole home system for many homeowners. Ductless systems can be great for older homes that that can’t easily accommodate ductwork, and they can also be great for additions and home expansions. But when it comes to ductless systems, you have two choices: going with a heat pump or using your ductless system just for air conditioning. Which is best for you? To answer this question, it’s best to take a look at the differences between the two options.

    Heat Pumps

Heat pump systems offer you both heating and cooling, so this would be the first item to consider when making choices in regard to your heat pump system. For those who already have a heating system with which they are comfortable, you may not need or want to use a ductless system that offers heating as well. Heat pumps are very energy efficient because they don’t need fossil fuels to heat your home, and they have a relatively long lifespan that ranges from 20-25 years. Because they work all year long, it is important to have a heat pump scheduled for maintenance bi-annually instead of just annually.

    Air Conditioning

With a ductless AC, you only get cooling, but you do gain the benefits of having customized cooling thanks to the indoor blowers (you get this with the heat pump as well) and the ability to reduce your energy usage because you won’t have to manage potentially faulty ductwork. As with a heat pump system, ductless air conditioning is easily expandable and annual maintenance will help keep your system running for 12-15 years.

Both types of systems offer easier installation, customized comfort and easy expansion. A single outdoor unit can support up to 4 indoor blowers with either AC or a heat pump.
