Low output is a common indicator of a problem with your air conditioner. Typically, it’s the first one that homeowners notice. If your air conditioner output is low, the first thing you should do is call for professional repairs. While you’re waiting for your HVAC technician to get there, though, have a look at some of the possible causes for low air conditioner output.
Refrigerant Leaks
An air conditioner cools a home by circulating refrigerant. It evaporates refrigerant to absorb thermal energy from the ducts in the home. It then condenses the refrigerant gas back into liquid in the condenser coil outside in order to vent the heat out of the home. Air conditioners rely on the same amount of refrigerant throughout their lifetimes, which makes refrigerant leaks a serious problem.
As the amount of refrigerant in the air conditioner drops, the system’s ability to cool the home effectively will drop, as well. At some point, the refrigerant supply will drop to the point where the air conditioner cannot continue functioning. If you notice fluid dripping from your air conditioner, especially if it coincides with falling output, it’s a good idea to call for repairs.
Clogged Air Filter
The air filter is meant to protect the air conditioner from a variety of contaminants commonly found in a home’s ductwork, like dust and pollen. It does this job well, but it has no way of getting rid of the junk that it captures from the air supply. If the filter isn’t replaced often enough, it will eventually will become clogged.
A clogged air filter will prevent most of the air flowing through the ducts from entering the air conditioner. Without proper air flow, the system will be unable to properly circulate cool air throughout the home. Fortunately, this is one of the easier problems to fix when it comes to air conditioning. Make sure that you replace the air filter at least once every three months, in order to prevent it from becoming clogged. If you aren’t sure how to replace your air filter, or don’t know what kind of filter the system uses, contact a professional.
Air Handler Problems
The air handler is basically a large motor with a fan attached to it. It’s the part that the air conditioner uses to blow air throughout the house during operation. Without the air handler, the system wouldn’t be able to circulate the air that it cools. So, if your air conditioner doesn’t seem to be blowing any air at all, it might be because of an issue with the air handler. This could be due to an electrical short preventing the part from operating properly. It’s also possible that the system just overheated and burned out from wear and tear. You’ll need to have a professional examine the system to tell for certain.
